For the uninitiated (or the Bikini Bottom tourists), the premise remains charmingly simple: a younger Patrick Star lives at home with his family and hosts his very own variety show for the neighborhood, broadcast from his television-turned-bedroom. That's the engine, and Season 6 keeps it humming along nicely across its new batch of episodes.
The core ensemble is intact and clearly having a ball. Bill Fagerbakke slides back into Patrick's fins like he never left, Thomas F. Wilson brings that big, booming dad energy as Cecil Star, Cree Summer pulls double duty as both Bunny Star and Grandma Tentacles, Jill Talley keeps Squidina grounded as the show-within-a-show's producer type, and Dana Snyder's GrandPat Star is - as always - a secret weapon who steals scenes with a single grumble. The genres listed are Family, Comedy, Animation, and Sci-Fi & Fantasy, and Season 6 delivers on all four fronts: the sci-fi/fantasy element especially gets room to breathe, because a variety show set in a kid's bedroom is basically a passport to anywhere the writers want to go.
At 11 minutes per episode, Season 6 keeps the pace lean and the jokes dense. No episode overstays its welcome - which is more than a lot of today's bloated streaming comedies can say.
