Vishwanath & Sons (2026) Review: Venky Atluri’s Heartfelt

Meet Sanjay "Sanju" Vishwanath (Suriya), a legendary professional handgunner in his 40s who has tasted every flavor of success: fame, fortune, and a family name that opens every door in Chennai. He’s the crown jewel of the Vishwanath dynasty, a man whose trigger finger is worth more than most people’s life savings. But success is lonely, and Sanju’s life is a series of trophies and empty hotel rooms.

Enter Madanakameshwari "Maddy Jay" Jothilingam (Mamitha Baiju), a fiery, unapologetic woman in her 20s who doesn’t care about his status. Their meeting is chaotic, their chemistry is electric, and their dynamic is... complicated. She’s not just a love interest; she’s a mirror, reflecting all the cracks in Sanju’s carefully constructed armor. As they navigate their age gap, family expectations, and the cutthroat world of professional shooting, they’re forced to confront what they truly want from life - and whether they’re willing to sacrifice everything for it. Oh, and there’s a decades-old family secret involving two formidable matriarchs - Nirmala Devi (Radhika Sarathkumar) and Anjali Devi (Raveena Tandon) - that threatens to blow up everything.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Suriya is phenomenal. He’s always been a star, but here he reminds us he’s also a performer. His Sanju is a man caught in amber - successful, respected, yet emotionally stunted. The way he switches from steely-eyed competitor to awkward, vulnerable middle-aged man crushing on a woman half his age is masterful. He doesn’t just play the part; he occupies it.

But the real revelation is Mamitha Baiju. As Maddy Jay, she’s a hurricane. She’s not here to be the "cool girl" who fixes the hero; she’s a fully realized person with her own trauma, goals, and fire. Her confrontations with Suriya are the film’s best sequences, crackling with genuine tension and romantic electricity. The age-gap romance could have easily been creepy, but their chemistry is so grounded and respectful that you find yourself rooting for them against your better judgment.

Director Venky Atluri deserves credit for swinging for the fences. This isn’t a simple boy-meets-girl story. It’s a modern family saga about legacy, masculinity, and the price of ambition. The handgun sequences are shot with terrifying precision - you can almost feel the recoil through the screen. The production design is ace, making the Vishwanath mansion feel like a character itself, cold and opulent.

However, the film’s biggest weakness is its runtime. At 161 minutes, it’s at least 20 minutes too long. The middle act sags under repetitive emotional beats and a subplot involving a corporate rival that goes nowhere. And while the dramatic finale is emotionally potent, the transition from "High-Octane Action Thriller" to "Weepy Family Drama" is awkwardly done. It’s like the film can’t decide if it wants to be a sports biopic, a rom-com, or a family melodrama.

Yet, despite the flaws, you can’t look away. The performances, the stunning cinematography, and the sheer audacity of the storytelling keep you hooked. It’s a messy, beautiful, overstuffed buffet of a movie - you’ll leave full, but you’ll be picking at the leftovers for days.
