Quick Verdict

The Mongoose is a lean, mean, 99-minute adrenaline shot that knows exactly what it is and wastes zero time apologizing for it. It's not trying to be Heat. It's trying to be the movie you put on when you want to eat nachos and watch a 74-year-old man outsmart three police departments at once. Mission accomplished, mostly.

Story

Ryan "Fang" Flanagan (Neeson) is a Special Forces legend whose heroism has been quietly rewritten as treason. Framed for something he absolutely did not do, he does the only logical thing a man with nothing to lose can do: he steals a car and drives. And drives. What follows is a televised, coast-to-coast pursuit that turns the manhunt into appointment viewing - the public doesn't just watch Fang run, they root for him.

His old battalion doesn't abandon him either. Tanker (Ving Rhames, relishing every second) and the rest of the crew feed him intel, swap out his rides, and generally make the authorities look like they're playing checkers on a chessboard. Meanwhile, Major Walter Pope (Michael Chiklis, radiating that special brand of bureaucratic menace) wants his reputation back, and Captain Parks (Hamish Michael) and Captain McBride (Toby Truslove) just want somebody to blame. Marisa Tomei pops up as Tara, and honestly, the film could have used more of her - she's the human pulse in a movie that's mostly engine noise.

Review

Let's be honest: the plot is about as subtle as a sledgehammer through a windshield. The framing conspiracy is sketched in broad strokes, and if you guess the twist in the first act, congratulations, you've seen a thriller before. But The Mongoose isn't selling mystery. It's selling momentum, and on that front, Vanselow delivers. The chase sequences have real geography - you feel the distance between Fang's battered sedan and the flashing lights behind it - and the televised angle gives the whole thing a fun, meta thrill. There's a scene where a diner full of strangers cheers his latest near-miss that lands better than it has any right to.

Neeson is on autopilot, but his autopilot is better than most actors' A-game. The man can communicate an entire backstory with a squint. Rhames is the film's secret weapon, stealing scenes with booming one-liners and a grin that says he's having the most fun on set. Chiklis, meanwhile, is a reliably hissable antagonist, all tight jaw and cheap suits.

The script, though, occasionally mistakes volume for intensity. Emotional beats arrive pre-packaged and undercooked - Tara's subplot feels like it was lifted from a different, more interesting movie. And the voice work from Stella Stocker as Helene adds a neat sci-fi-adjacent wrinkle that's never fully explored. At 99 minutes, the film moves fast, but it also skips a few exits it probably should have taken.

Still, when it cooks, it cooks. The public-rooting-for-the-fugitive conceit gives the action a satirical edge, and the climax delivers exactly the catharsis you came for. It's a 7/10 kind of night - not a masterpiece, but a very good time.

Final Verdict

The Mongoose won't win awards, and it won't reinvent the genre - but it doesn't need to. It's a sturdy, satisfying popcorn thriller with a legendary leading man doing what he does best, a strong supporting cast having a blast, and a chase that keeps its foot on the gas. Catch it in theaters today, grab a bucket of popcorn, and enjoy the ride. Sometimes that's all you need.
