Sardar 2 Review: Karthi's Spy Thriller Goes Bigger

The film kicks off with a threat that feels ripped from a geopolitical nightmare: a shadowy outfit called the Black Dagger, led by the enigmatic Muhammad Paari (S. J. Suryah), has its sights set on national security. That's the cue for Inspector Vijay to suit up for the most dangerous assignment of his life - one that forces him to confront the very legacy he's been chasing.

Here's where Sardar 2 gets clever. Instead of simply piling on new missions, Mithran digs into the past. The movie finally answers the question fans have been asking since 2022: how did Chandra Bose become the legend known as Sardar? Through flashbacks and reveals, we see the sacrifices that forged him - and the buried secrets that now threaten to unravel everything. But the real showstopper is S. J. Suryah. As Black Dagger, he delivers exactly the kind of operatic, unhinged antagonist performance that Tamil cinema does better than anyone. Where Sardar 2 stumbles is in its ambition. Mithran wants to be a political thriller, a family drama, an origin story, and a globe-trotting action spectacle all at once. That's a lot of plates, and a few of them wobble. The middle stretch drags under exposition, and some of the reveals land with a thud rather than a gasp. The action choreography is slick and suitably bombastic, but the editing occasionally cuts so fast you lose the geography of a fight.
