Master of the Universe Movie Review: Epic or Cheesy?

Prince Eli (Matthew Gademske) is your classic chosen one - reluctant, broody, and saddled with a destiny he never asked for. You see, there’s an evil alien named Chancellor Faurtax (Krymis J Fernando) who wants to take over Earth, and then the whole universe. Why? Because that’s what evil aliens do, apparently. Eli must unlock his untapped powers (cue the glowing hands and CGI lightning) to fight back alongside a scrappy group of allies: his love interest Ella (Morgan Flanagan), the wise-cracking Gunnar (Antonio Valles), and the stern Samara (Telisha Johnson). The plot is a straight line from “oh no, the bad guy is here” to “let’s go punch the bad guy.” No twists, no subplots, no surprises. It’s the narrative equivalent of a PowerPoint presentation: “Slide 1: Earth in Danger. Slide 2: Power Up. Slide 3: Win.” Credits.

Let’s start with the positives, because I’m not a total monster. Director Marcel Walz knows how to keep things moving. At 81 minutes, Master of the Universe doesn’t overstay its welcome. It zips from one set piece to the next with the energy of a kid bouncing off the walls on a sugar high. The action, while cheap, is at least coherent - you can tell what’s happening, and sometimes that’s half the battle in low-budget sci-fi. Matthew Gademske tries his best with Prince Eli, delivering lines like “I don’t want to be the chosen one… but I guess I have to be” with a straight face. Good on him.

But oh boy, the problems stack up like cardboard boxes in a storm. The script feels like it was written by someone who read a synopsis of Flash Gordon and The Last Starfighter while half-asleep. Every line is either exposition (“Chancellor Faurtax wants the Universal Crystal!”) or a generic rallying cry (“We fight for Earth!”). There’s zero character development. Ella is literally just there to be rescued and then give Eli a pep talk. Gunnar cracks jokes that land with the thud of a wet sock. And Chancellor Faurtax? He’s got all the menace of a middle manager who lost his parking spot. Krymis J Fernando delivers his villainous monologues with gusto, but the dialogue is so wooden he might as well be reading a furniture catalog.

The special effects are where this movie truly earns its 4.8 rating. The spaceships look like they were clipped from a 1990s video game and pasted onto the background. The “untapped powers” are just colored sparks and a bit of slow-motion. There’s a scene where Eli fights an army of alien soldiers that appear to be three guys in cheap rubber suits, shot from different angles to make it look like a crowd. At one point, I’m pretty sure I saw a stunt double’s wig fall off. It’s not bad enough to be hilarious, but it’s bad enough to make you sigh.

The cast, to be fair, commits fully. Morgan Flanagan brings genuine warmth to Ella, and Telisha Johnson as Samara has a moment where she sternly says “We don’t have time for this” that almost feels real. But they’re fighting an uphill battle against a script that treats every character like a cardboard cutout. Even the legendary Bryan Barron - yes, that Bryan Barron, who you’ve never heard of - shows up as Atrious and says exactly two lines before disappearing for 40 minutes.

Pros

• Short runtime means you won’t suffer long
• Action scenes are well-choreographed for the budget
• The cast gives it their all, even when the script doesn’t
• A few genuinely funny accidental moments (watch for the alien that trips)
• Fun for a certain kind of campy movie night

Cons

• Paper-thin plot with zero surprises
• Terrible dialogue that sounds like a first draft
• Special effects that belong on a 1995 TV show
• Villain is laughably unthreatening
• Characters are interchangeable - I still don’t know who Gunnar is
• The “untapped powers” are underwhelming (just some sparks)

Master of the Universe is exactly the kind of movie you’d expect from a title that sounds like a rejected ’80s toy commercial. It’s earnest, it’s goofy, and it’s just barely watchable. Director Marcel Walz clearly had ambitions, but a tight budget and a flimsy script turned this into a forgettable footnote in the sci-fi genre. If you’re a completionist who needs to see every “chosen one” story ever made, go ahead - but lower your expectations. For the rest of us, this is one universe you can safely leave unconquered.
