Epic - First Semester Review: A Tender Telugu Romance

Rohan is a middle-class kid who flies abroad not because he's chasing a dream, but because his family decided the dream for him. That setup alone should feel painfully familiar to anyone whose relatives treat a foreign degree like a status symbol. Aditya, played by Anand Deverakonda, lands in a new country with too much luggage and not nearly enough emotional preparation.

What follows is a semester-long crash course in being a person. There's Kadali (Vaishnavi Chaitanya), a fellow student who becomes the emotional center of gravity. There's the slow, awkward process of figuring out who you are when nobody's watching and the group chat back home is asleep. And there's the constant pull of Chandra Sekhar and Shobha Rani, the parents whose expectations hang over every phone call like a monsoon cloud.

If the plot sounds light on twists, that's because it is. Hasan is far more interested in texture than plot mechanics. The drama comes from small humiliations, tiny victories, and the quiet horror of realizing you've been living someone else's life plan.

Here's the thing about Epic - First Semester: it's not actually epic. And honestly, that's fine. The title promises scale, but the film works best at whisper volume. Hasan builds the movie around glances, half-finished sentences, and the specific loneliness of a shared kitchen at 2 AM.

Anand Deverakonda carries the film with a performance that's all nervous energy and badly hidden hurt. He's good at playing a guy who's pretending to be fine, which is basically the entire immigrant-student experience in one acting choice. Vaishnavi Chaitanya matches him beat for beat, giving Kadali a warmth that never tips into Manic Pixie Dream Girl territory. Their scenes together have a lived-in rhythm, like two people who genuinely enjoy annoying each other.

Sivaji Sontineni and Vasuki Anand do solid work as the parents, though the script occasionally reduces them to walking guilt generators. Master Rohan Roy shows up as young Aditya in flashback beats that are sweet, if a little sentimental.

The 150-minute runtime is where things get wobbly. Hasan loves his characters enough to let scenes breathe, but sometimes they breathe so long you start checking your watch. A tighter edit would've turned a good film into a genuinely affecting one. There are also stretches in the second half where the movie forgets it's a romance and briefly becomes a lecture about life choices.

Still, when the emotional payoff lands, it lands hard. The final act earns its tears, mostly because the film spent so long making us sit with these people instead of rushing them toward a resolution.

This is Telugu cinema doing what it does well: telling a specific story with universal feelings. No superheroes, no mass hero elevation, just a kid trying to grow up in a country that doesn't owe him anything.
