Peddi Movie Review: Pure Masala Magic or Total Mess?

Imagine living in a place that officially doesn't exist. That's the harsh, heartbreaking reality for the villagers in Peddi. Tucked away from modern maps and completely ignored by government records, this forgotten settlement has no rights, no resources, and no voice. Enter Peddi Pehelwan (Ram Charan), a rugged, dirt-coated laborer with an extraordinary, raw athletic talent that defies human limits.

When the villainous Appalasoori (Jagapati Babu) and corrupt systemic forces try to wipe the village off the face of the earth, Peddi realizes his physical prowess is the only leverage his people have. To force the government to officially recognize their home, Peddi must step into the arena, turning his athletic gifts into a weapon of rebellion. Along his grueling journey, he’s supported by his fierce love, Achiyyamma (Janhvi Kapoor), his loyal friend Ram Bujji (Divyendu Sharma), and the veteran guidance of Gournaidu (Shiva Rajkumar). But the road to recognition is paved with blood, sweat, and political betrayals.

Let’s address the elephant in the theater first: 189 minutes is a long sit. Director Buchi Babu Sana, who proved he could handle intense emotional depth in his previous work, aims for the stars here. He builds a world that feels incredibly tactile, dusty, and desperate. The first half is a masterclass in atmosphere, establishing the sheer hopelessness of the village and the kinetic force of Peddi's existence.

Ram Charan is, without a doubt, the beating heart of this film. Playing Peddi Pehelwan, he undergoes a stunning physical transformation, commanding the screen with a silent, simmering rage that erupts into pure fire during the athletic set-pieces. His chemistry with Janhvi Kapoor’s Achiyyamma is sweet, though Janhvi’s character unfortunately gets sidelined in the second half by the sheer volume of political and sports-centric subplots.

Speaking of subplots, the supporting cast is absolutely stacked. Shiva Rajkumar brings an incredible, commanding presence as Gournaidu, stealing virtually every scene he’s in. On the antagonist front, Jagapati Babu is deliciously menacing as Appalasoori, while Ravi Kishan and Boman Irani add great flavor as Ranadheer Sisodia and Kiran Singh Baiswal, representing the larger-than-life external forces trying to suppress Peddi's rise. Divyendu Sharma is also a welcome surprise, bringing a grounded, emotional dynamic as the trusty Ram Bujji.

Where Peddi falters, however, is its pacing in the second half. The transition from a gritty story of rural survival to a sprawling national sports-drama feels a bit disjointed. Buchi Babu Sana tries to weave political intrigue (spearheaded by Rao Ramesh’s Subhadra Rao) with athletic triumph, resulting in a middle section that sags under the weight of its own ambition. Still, the sheer adrenaline of the climax mostly makes up for the lulls.
