Kantara Chapter 1 Review: A Mind-Blowing Divine Epic!

Set way back during the Kadamba reign, the film takes us to the fictional, wealthy feudatory land of Bangra. Disaster strikes when King Vijayendra (played with royal gravity) ventures too deep into the mystical, whispering forest of Kantara and meets a grim, mysterious fate. Terrified of what lurks in the green abyss, his son, King Rajashekara (Jayaram), seals the borders of the realm, cutting off the kingdom from the wild.

Fast forward through years of isolation to Prince Kulashekara (Gulshan Devaiah), a royal who doesn't share his father’s superstitious dread. In a bid to reclaim the forest's resources, Kulashekara reopens the borders through a sheer, bloody massacre. Enter Berme (Rishab Shetty), a charismatic and rugged protagonist seeking prosperity. When Berme crosses the forbidden divide, he doesn’t just walk into a forest-he steps directly into a divine collision of faith, royal corruption, and ancient nature spirits.

Rishab Shetty has done it again, but this time, he’s armed with a much bigger budget and a massive fantasy sandbox to play in. Chapter 1 transitions the franchise from a gritty, localized legend into a sweeping historical epic. The cinematography is utterly gorgeous; the forest of Kantara isn't just a backdrop, it’s a living, breathing, and terrifying character that demands respect.

Acting-wise, Shetty is a force of nature as Berme. He balances the earthly, swaggering charm of an opportunist with the intense, animalistic spirituality of his alter-ego, Mayakara. But the real scene-stealer here is Gulshan Devaiah. As the ruthless, calculating Prince Kulashekara, Devaiah brings a cold, psychopathic edge to the royal throne that makes him a terrifying foil to Berme's raw passion. Rukmini Vasanth also brings a grounded, emotional anchor to the chaos as Princess Kanakavathi, while Jayaram and Ramitha Shailendra provide excellent dramatic weight to the royal court drama.

Where the film occasionally stumbles is in its pacing. At nearly two and three-quarter hours, the second act gets bogged down in political scheming and royal family drama that feels a tad conventional compared to the wild, hallucinatory folklore elements we came to see. Thankfully, the action choreography and the breathtaking sound design-which rattles your ribcage in the best way possible-more than make up for the occasional lull. When the supernatural elements kick into high gear, the film is pure adrenaline.

• Bloated Runtime: At 165 minutes, some of the palace politics in the mid-section could have easily been trimmed.
• Pacing Hiccups: The transition between high-stakes fantasy and slow-burn royal drama occasionally kills the momentum.

Kantara - A Legend: Chapter 1 is a rare prequel that actually justifies its existence by expanding the lore in a massive way. It trades some of the intimate, raw charm of the original for grand scale and high-fantasy action, but the soul of the franchise remains fiercely intact. If you want to witness a masterclass in how to blend cultural folklore with blockbuster spectacle, this is your ticket. Just be prepared for a slightly long sit-down-the destination is entirely worth the journey.
