Baahubali: The Beginning Review - Total Action Insanity!

The film kicks off with a literal splash as a desperate queen, Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan), emerges from a cave clutching an infant. Sacrificing herself to save the baby from drowning, she holds him aloft in a raging river, a striking image that sets the mythological tone of the entire story.

Rescued by local villagers, the child grows up to be Shivudu (Prabhas), an incredibly strong and free-spirited young man with a habit of trying to scale a colossal, cloud-capped waterfall. When he finally makes it to the top, he finds a world far larger and darker than his own. Shivudu meets Avanthika (Tamannaah Bhatia), a fierce warrior princess belonging to a rebel group.

He learns that her faction is fighting to rescue Queen Devasena (Anushka Shetty), who has been kept in chains for 25 years by the tyrannical king Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati). Shivudu takes it upon himself to infiltrate the heavily fortified city of Mahishmati to free her, a mission that unlocks the secrets of his own legendary lineage, his connection to the loyal slave-commander Kattappa (Sathyaraj), and his destiny as the heir to a fallen king.

What makes Bāhubali: The Beginning such an enduring triumph is Rajamouli’s absolute lack of cynicism. There is no winking at the camera, no self-referential irony. When Prabhas lifts a monolithic stone pillar on his shoulders, the movie expects you to cheer, and because of his effortless charisma, you absolutely do. Prabhas plays his dual role with a massive, grinning charm that contrasts perfectly with Rana Daggubati’s menacing, physically imposing Bhallaladeva. The world of Mahishmati is a sight to behold. Rajamouli constructs a grand fantasy landscape that feels deeply rooted in ancient Indian epic traditions while maintaining a pacing that rivals modern comic book cinema. The second half of the film transitions into an extended flashback, culminating in a jaw-dropping battle sequence against King Kalakeya (Prabhakar) and his barbarian hordes. The tactical choreography here is brilliant, featuring innovative battle formations, giant flaming cloths, and defensive strategies that feel refreshingly original.

If there’s a weak link, it’s the visual effects. Some of the green-screen work and CGI animals have aged a bit rough, occasionally pulling you out of the immersion. However, the film’s sheer creative audacity and emotional sincerity more than make up for any digital hiccups. Sathyaraj’s performance as Kattappa provides the emotional anchor of the film, and his final, tragic revelation in the movie’s closing seconds remains one of the greatest cliffhangers in modern cinematic history.
