Quick Verdict

This is the animated sequel we dreamed of but never dared to ask for. It’s lean, emotional, and visually staggering. The voice cast is a revelation, the action sequences are the best since Spider-Verse, and the story - while familiar in structure - packs a punch that lands right in the gut. If you loved the original series, you will cry. If you’re new to the world of Avatar, you’ll want to binge 61 episodes immediately. Either way, book a ticket and bring tissues.

Story

Set some years after the end of the Hundred Year War, the film finds Aang (voiced with warmth and gravitas by Eric Nam) struggling with a familiar ghost: the near-total extinction of the Air Nomads. When he learns of an ancient power that could literally restore his culture - not just rebuild temples, but bring back the bending souls of his people - he sets off on a global quest. Naturally, Katara (Jessica Matten), Sokka (Román Zaragoza), Toph (Dionne Quan), and Zuko (a brilliant Steven Yeun) come along for the ride, alongside the fantastic new antagonist Tagah, voiced with growly, tragic menace by Dave Bautista.

The core conflict is elegant: what would you sacrifice to bring back something you’ve lost? The power Aang seeks could heal the deepest wound of his life - but it might also tip the world into a new war, especially if Tagah gets his hands on it first. The plot moves at a brisk 99 minutes, never wasting a scene, and weaves in philosophical questions about legacy, chosen family, and whether some things are better left buried, even if they belong to the past.

Review

Let’s start with the elephant in the room - or rather, the flying bison. The animation is absolutely staggering. Montgomery and her team blend 2D and 3D techniques with a fluidity that makes every bending sequence feel like a dance. Water flows like silk, fire cracks like actual lightning, and earthbending - especially Toph’s seismic sense in a cave sequence - is a masterclass in visual storytelling. The colors pop with a painterly quality that honors the original show’s aesthetic while pushing it forward.

The voice work is the secret weapon. Eric Nam is a revelation as Aang. He captures the character’s eternal optimism but also layers in a new, weary sadness - a man literally carrying the weight of a dead nation. Jessica Matten’s Katara is both fierce and maternal, while Román Zaragoza gives Sokka a more grounded humor (less slapstick, more dry wit). Steven Yeun’s Zuko is coiled like a spring, every line carrying the wisdom of a former prince who’s earned his peace. And Dave Bautista? He’s terrifying and heartbreaking as Tagah, a villain with understandable motivations but zero chill.

The film’s emotional core is held by two parallel threads: Aang’s desperate hope to save his people, and a quiet, wordless moment between Katara and Zuko that had the entire cinema gasping. No spoilers, but if you’re a Zutara shipper, you might want to bring a paper bag to breathe into. The 99-minute runtime means some side characters (looking at you, Suki and Mai) get shortchanged, but the central ensemble is so strong you barely notice.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Eric Nam’s performance as Aang is career-defining - vulnerable, funny, and deeply lived-in.
  • The animation is a visual feast; each bending style feels distinct and kinetic.
  • The script respects the original lore while introducing fresh, high-stakes mythology.
  • Dave Bautista’s Tagah is a genuinely compelling antagonist with a tragic arc.
  • The emotional payoff is earned - I cried three times, and I’m not ashamed.

Cons

  • At 99 minutes, it occasionally rushes through subplots. The Gaang’s first reunion feels a bit too tidy.
  • Some fans may feel the new power system (the “Ancient Vessel” concept) is introduced too conveniently.
  • A few beloved side characters (Iroh has a cameo, but it’s tiny) deserved more screen time.

Final Verdict

Avatar: The Last Airbender is the rarest of beasts: a legacy sequel that feels essential, not exploitative. Montgomery has crafted a film that honors the original series’ heart while standing on its own as a beautiful, action-packed, and deeply moving story. The 9.2 TMDb score isn’t hype - it’s recognition that this is what we needed. Aang’s journey isn’t over, and neither is the magic of this world. Do not miss it on the big screen. The bending alone is worth the price of admission.
