If you thought Malayalam cinema was going to take a breather after a historic run of global hits, think again. The industry is keeping its foot firmly on the gas pedal, and the next massive blip on our cinematic radar is Thudakkam.

For context, the Malayalam film industry (or Mollywood, as it’s affectionately known) has transitioned from being India’s best-kept secret to a powerhouse of elite storytelling. So, when a project unites one of the region’s most ambitious directors with its most legendary superstar, you don’t just watch-you buy your tickets the second they go on sale.

With the buzz reaching a fever pitch, here is everything you need to know about Thudakkam before it takes over your social media feeds.

Release Date & Where to Watch

Mark your calendars, set your phone alerts, and maybe call in sick because Thudakkam is scheduled to hit theaters on August 7, 2026.

Coming right in the late-summer sweet spot, the film is poised to secure a massive theatrical release. As is standard with high-profile Malayalam cinema, the film will first dominate the big screen to let audiences soak in what promises to be a visual spectacle. A streaming release on a major platform is bound to follow a few weeks later, but if you want to avoid spoilers and experience the crowd energy, the theater is the only place to be this August.

Cast & Crew

The mastermind steering this ship is none other than director Jude Anthany Joseph. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he directed the monumental survival drama 2018: Everyone is a Hero, which became a massive box-office juggernaut and was India’s official entry to the Academy Awards. Jude has a knack for handling massive scales without losing the emotional pulse of his characters, making him the perfect captain for an action-heavy drama.

But the real talking point that has cinephiles losing their minds is the cast. Leading the pack is the iconic Mohanlal-a man who needs no introduction. "Lalettan" is a living legend, capable of delivering powerhouse dramatic performances and physics-defying mass action with equal ease.

Sharing the billing is Vismaya Mohanlal. For years, Vismaya has stayed largely out of the intense media spotlight that usually follows star kids, choosing instead to focus on writing and martial arts. Seeing her name alongside her legendary father's in a major action-drama has sent curiosity levels through the roof.

Rounding out the talented ensemble are powerhouse performers like Jaffer Idukki (an absolute chameleon of an actor), Kottayam Ramesh, Jaya Kurup, Aashish Joe Antony, Gibin Gopinath, and Bobby Kurian. It’s a cast that screams character-driven depth.

Story & What to Expect

While the production team has kept specific plot details locked away in a high-security vault, the title Thudakkam-which translates to "The Beginning" or "The Start"-gives us plenty of room to speculate.

Categorized strictly as an Action-Drama, we can expect a narrative that balances high-octane physical stakes with deeply personal, emotional conflicts. Jude Anthany Joseph isn't a director who does mindless action; even his most kinetic sequences are driven by character motivation.

Given the title and the presence of Mohanlal and Vismaya, we might be looking at a story centered on legacy, redemption, or a grueling fight for a fresh start against insurmountable odds. Expect grit, stunning cinematography, and a narrative structure that keeps you guessing until the final frame.

Why It's Worth Watching

If you aren't already sold, let’s break down why Thudakkam is a mandatory watch this August:

  • The Post-'2018' Jude Anthany Joseph Era: Jude has proven he can deliver world-class cinema that resonates globally. Watching how he utilizes a legendary actor like Mohanlal in an action-drama setup is going to be a masterclass in direction.
  • The Mohanlal Factor: Mohanlal in a gritty, dramatic action role is the gold standard of South Indian cinema. When the script demands both emotional gravitas and screen-shaking charisma, there is simply no one better.
  • A Unique Family Dynamic: The curiosity surrounding Vismaya Mohanlal's role is immense. Watching her share a creative space with her father is a pop-culture event in itself.
  • Mollywood's Golden Streak: Malayalam cinema is currently on an unprecedented creative high. The attention to detail, realistic performances, and technical brilliance of the region's filmmakers mean that even standard genre films are elevated to art.
