Lust Stories 3 Review: Motwane's Boldest Anthology Yet

As with any anthology, you're getting four bite-sized films, each exploring lust, love, and repressed desire through wildly different lenses. The roster is stacked: Radhika Apte as Padma, Konkona Sen Sharma as Shonali, Vijay Varma as Hemant, Abhishek Banerjee as Debendu, Ali Fazal as Varun, Radhikka Madan as Sailee, Aditi Rao Hydari as Saira, and Siddharth as Badru. That's an embarrassment of acting riches, and Motwane wisely lets each performer own their chapter.

The connective tissue here is repression - the things people want but won't say, the desires they bury under duty, marriage, and middle-class respectability. Each segment finds its characters at a crossroads where honesty feels more dangerous than silence. Some stories lean into humor, others into quiet devastation. One goes full melodrama. The tonal shifts are jarring at times, but that's been the franchise's MO since day one.

Let's start with the obvious: Motwane was the right call. The guy knows how to build tension out of nothing - a glance, a pause, a hand that doesn't quite reach. In an anthology about desire, that restraint is gold. He resists the urge to make everything sweaty and dramatic, letting the quieter moments carry the weight instead. The result feels less like a Bollywood sex anthology and more like a series of short stories by someone who actually understands people.

Radhika Apte is the standout, and I don't say that lightly given who she's sharing screen time with. She's been doing phenomenal work for years, but Padma gives her something raw to chew on, and she delivers. Konkona Sen Sharma matches her beat for beat in a segment that's easily the most emotionally devastating of the four. These two women are operating on a different plane, and whenever they're on screen, you forget you're watching an anthology.

Vijay Varma continues his hot streak - the man can play charming and unnervingly vulnerable in the same breath. Ali Fazal and Aditi Rao Hydari bring genuine heat, while Abhishek Banerjee and Radhikka Madan get the lighter, funnier material and make it work. Siddharth rounds things out with a restrained turn that sneaks up on you.

The problem? Length. At 165 minutes, one chapter overstays its welcome and starts repeating itself. You can feel the momentum dip right before the finale, and that's a shame because the closing segment is strong. A tighter edit - shaving 20 minutes, easy - would've made this a genuine knockout.

Also worth noting: the anthology still struggles with tonal whiplash. Going from a gut-punch drama to a comedic romp can leave you scrambling to recalibrate. It's a franchise feature, not a bug, but it doesn't always serve the individual stories.
