Here’s the deal: King Viserys (the late, great Paddy Considine, RIP) broke a century of tradition by naming his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy, who radiates volcanic intensity) as heir to the Iron Throne. Then he fathered a son, Aegon, and-surprise-didn’t change his mind. That decision didn’t sit well with the Hightowers, especially Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke, acting with the subtlety of a dagger). Fast-forward through betrayals, deaths, and a whole lot of dragon fire, and you’ve got the Dance of the Dragons: a civil war that turns the Seven Kingdoms into a barbecue pit.
The current season (Season 4, just wrapped) picks up with Rhaenyra’s faction-the Blacks-and Alicent’s faction-the Greens-locked in a stalemate that’s less chess match and more bar brawl with swords. Add in Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith, channeling chaos incarnate), the Sea Snake (Steve Toussaint, gravelly and commanding), and a new player, Lord Ormund Hightower (James Norton, slimy in a way that’s almost charming), and you’ve got a stew that’s boiling over.
